This link may earn us a commission. You pay the same, and it never decides what we list. How we make money

Before you start

  • No sign-up bonus for you: Capital One’s referral programme rewards the person who invites you, not you. Your benefit is the quick odds check.
  • Odds check = soft inquiry, applying = hard inquiry: Checking what you’re likely to be approved for doesn’t affect your credit score. If you accept an offer and apply, Capital One does a hard inquiry that can lower your score.
  • Not a guarantee: Capital One may still need to verify your information before it opens an account. A credit freeze or lock makes you ineligible, and a recent Capital One card or two or more applications within 30 days can too.
  • Best for people without a Capital One card: The referral only counts when you aren’t already a Capital One or Capital One small business cardholder. Holders of retail partner cards (such as REI or Kohl’s) can still be referred.
  • Use the link to apply: The referral is only tracked if you apply through this link. You’ll be asked for details such as income and date of birth. Capital One cards are for US applicants.

How to use it

  1. Step 1: Open our Capital One link.
  2. Step 2: Answer Capital One’s short questions (income, date of birth and so on) to see which cards you’re likely to be approved for.
  3. Step 3: Pick a card you want and apply through the same link.

A referral doesn’t change Capital One’s approval criteria, rates or fees. Read the card’s terms before you apply. This is not financial advice.

About Capital One

Capital One is a US bank best known for credit cards. Its pre-approval tool shows which cards you’re likely to qualify for after a short questionnaire, using a soft inquiry that doesn’t affect your credit score. Existing cardholders can share a personal referral link and earn a bonus when someone approved through it opens a card.

Does a referral make approval more likely?

Capital One doesn’t say so. Approval depends on your credit profile and its criteria, no matter who invited you.

Will checking my odds hurt my credit score?

No. The eligibility check is a soft inquiry. Only applying for a card triggers a hard inquiry.

What do we get out of this?

Capital One pays the person who referred you a bonus once your card application is approved, and it can take up to 8 weeks to show. It doesn’t change your card or your terms.
