This link may earn us a commission. You pay the same, and it never decides what we list. How we make money

Before you start

  • New to Venmo, or never used it for payments: You qualify if you never had a Venmo account, or have one but never sent or received a personal payment. Business and charity profiles don’t qualify.
  • Send at least $5 to another Venmo user: It must be a personal payment of $5 or more, paid from a linked bank account, debit card or credit card.
  • 14 days from when the link was created: Venmo’s terms count the 14 days from the day the invite link was created, not from the day you tap it. If the window has passed, no reward is paid.
  • Reward arrives in 14 days, sometimes 30: Venmo says you should get it within fourteen days, but it can take up to thirty. It lands in your Venmo account.
  • US only, 18 or older: Venmo is for people in the United States with a US phone number, who are at least 18 (or the age of majority in their state).

How to use it

  1. Step 1: Open our Venmo link on your phone and install the app, or tap the link if you already have it.
  2. Step 2: Create your account and link a bank account, debit card or credit card.
  3. Step 3: Send at least $5 to another Venmo user (a friend, or pay someone back) within the 14 days.
  4. Step 4: Wait for the $5 to appear in your Venmo balance, usually within 14 days.

Venmo can change or end its referral rewards at any time and decides who qualifies. Venmo’s referral terms list a past end date, so check the offer shown in the app before you send money just for the bonus.

About Venmo

Venmo is a US mobile payments app owned by PayPal. People use it to split bills, pay each other and shop with a linked bank account, debit card or credit card. Payments to friends are shown in a social feed (you can set them to private).

Is this open to people outside the US?

No. Venmo requires a US phone number and US residency.

I already have Venmo. Can I still get the $5?

Only if you’ve never sent or received a personal payment there. Venmo’s referral FAQ also mentions accounts that have been inactive for 12 months.

What do we get out of this?

Venmo pays the person who invited you $5 too (up to ten rewards, $50 in total). It doesn’t change what you get.
